This app is recommended for anyone who in interested in Alcoholics Anonymous. It contains the first 164 pages of the Big Book, along with many personal stories to provide hope and inspiration. This app also provides daily meditation ideas and can be used to record sobriety dates. If that wasn’t enough it is also possible to use this application for recording the contact details of sponsors or friends in AA.
Twenty Four Hours a Day
Twenty Four Hours a Day is available for $4.99 in the iTunes Store
This app is made up of material from the Twenty Four Hours a Day book produced by Hazelden. It contains a daily meditation that people can focus on throughout the day. The fact that this material is available on their iPhone means that they can always have it near. There is one meditation for each day of the year so this is something that can be used long-term.
Joe & Charlie
Joe & Charlie is available for $2.99 in the iTunes Store.
This is another Alcoholics Anonymous app. It contains audio recordings of two inspirational members called Joe and Charlie. These talks were produced back in 1973 but remain popular today. These two characters began studying the Big Book together and these recording are their account of what they found out during their investigations. These talks are highly informative and often funny. This application is a good value for money because the CDs normally sell for about $30. It is an ideal choice for people who wish to learn more about the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. There is 6 hours of audio material here.
Kindle is available for Free in the iTunes Store.
This app allows people to read any of the eBooks from Amazon on their iPhone. There are currently about 950,000 books available plus electronic magazines and newspapers. There are also plenty of books dealing with addiction recovery. This means that people will be able to take inspirational material with them no matter where they go. Once they have downloaded a book they no longer need an internet connection. In the past it was possible to order new books directly from the app, but now these need to be ordered directly from the Amazon website. This can be done using the iPhone browser.
iBooks is available for free in the iTunes store.
This is the app that is specifically made for the iPhone. The advantage of it is that it allows people to add PDFs to their iPhone. This is good because there are so many free PDF documents that will be of interest to people in recovery. The downside with this eBook reader is that it does not as yet have the same impressive collection of books as the Kindle.
Mindfulness Meditation is available for $1.99 in the iTunes store.
An increasing number of people are using mindfulness meditation to help them build a successful recovery away from addiction. This app is based on scientific mindfulness stress reduction without any of the religious trappings; this means that it should be suitable for people no matter what their background. The app is made up of a series of guided meditations narrated by Stephan Bodian who wrote Meditation for Dummies. Meditations start at 5 minutes in length and go all the way up to 40 minutes.
Breathe2relax is available for free in the iTunes store.
This free app is a simple relaxation tool. It helps people reduce their stress levels by focusing on their breathing. Those in recovery can often find themselves in a position where they feel a bit overwhelmed. By using this application they will be able to once again gain control over their thinking. It comes with a tutorial for how to get the most benefit from the app. It can also be used as a simple introduction to meditation.
Getting the Most from iPhone Apps in Recovery
Just downloading these applications to the iPhone is unlikely to keep anyone sober. Here are a few suggestions for how to get the most from them.
* Taking time out each day to read some inspirational material is highly recommended because it provides motivation. The advantage of the iPhone is that it means that such material will always be on hand. If people are really stuck for time they can even use their toilet breaks for a bit of reading.
* If people are feeling stressed they can use one of the many meditation apps.
* Going to a social occasion here there is going to be alcohol available can be particularly stressful in early recovery. Sometimes attendance at these events will be unavoidable. If people are feeling shaky at such events they may gain strength from a recovery app.
