Bath Salts are new and dangerous drug that comes under the euphemistic name of research chemicals. These chemicals are experimental synthetic compounds that are made in backyard laboratories and designed to mimic drugs such as cocaine, amphetamines and psychoactive substances. These type of drugs are described as research chemicals because they are new substances that have very little information about them regarding their effects. Toxicity is often unknown and information about the experience these drugs give a user are usually based on small human studies. Bath Salts are typically made of the compounds Mephedrone or methylenedioxypyrovalerone, known as MDVP.
Bath Salts are a brilliant white crystalline powder that is packaged as sold as a legal high across America. They often come with packaging that states not for human consumption but they are intended to be snorted, smoked or ingested by people. Bath Salts reportedly give users an experience that is likened to cocaine, amphetamines and MDMA combined. Euphoria, hallucinations, enhanced creativity, empathy, chattiness, energy and sexual arousal are some of the typical positive effects that users report.
The risks involved with the use of Bath Salts are potentially greater than taking other illicit substances due to the unknown effects on people. This is whether there are interactions with other drugs including alcohol, or at what level of toxicity the drugs may have. Unlike other drugs, research chemicals have often not been taken by many people. Information regarding the experience may be based on only a few stories. What is know is that both Mephedrone and MDVP are incredibly unstable, unpredictable chemicals. Both these compounds are are very potent even in small doses and typically the drug is sold as having purity levels of over 90 percent. This is an significant level of chemical potency, especially when compared with other typical drugs like cocaine and amphetamines that have a purity of less than 50 percent.
Bath Salts are often purchased online or in shops that sell legal highs . When purchased online, the drugs are then posted to the purchaser who will receive nothing more than a bag of pills or powder and a receipt. Sellers often try to restrict sale to legal drinking age, but may not do any checks to confirm. By purchasing Bath Salts drugs from online sources is that there could be potentially many risks with the type of substance purchased, the effect it will have, and whether a person is committing a crime when they purchase the drug.
There are a significant number of reports stating negative side effects including muscle tension, gastrointestinal disturbances, involuntary body movements, increased and irregular heartbeat, extreme paranoia, dizziness, confusion, severe headaches, excessive energy and excitement, aggression and an uncontrollable urge to redose. Psychosis is a serious and very common side effect of high doses of MDVP.
Bath Salts have a very frightening yet very common side effect of drug psychosis. Due to the nature of the drug and the lack of accurate information about doses and safety, it is impossible to safeguard users against this phenomenon. Overdosing on MDVP is something that can happen to even the most experienced drug user due to the intense cravings the drug creates. Binging on the drug is not unusual. When a user slips into a psychosis, they may not be aware it has happened. They may exhibit signs of distress, excessive violence, incoherent rambling speaking, scattered thoughts and extreme paranoia and anxiety. They will often have a very elevated heart rate and body temperature. Users may experience severe headaches, nausea and chest pain.
