Addiction
If a person is using alcohol or drugs and alcohol or drugs are negatively impacting their life, then that person has an addiction. Addiction can occur even without physical dependency (increased tolerance and withdrawal symptoms) on a drug or alcohol. So, physical dependency is not a criterion for addiction. The bottom line is: if a person can’t control, cut down or stop using, even when the substance use is creating problems with job, school, family life, the legal system, health, social life, or interpersonal relationships, s/he has an addiction and a problem with substance abuse. Regarding alcohol specifically: Addiction + Physical Dependency = Alcoholism.
Rehab
At the addiction stage of drug & alcohol use, much of the time professional help is needed. Trained professionals can help provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities for tackling and overcoming substance abuse and addiction. Of course, the decision to stop the substance abuse and begin a path of rehabilitation and recovery is up to the person with the alcohol or drug abuse and addiction problem.
There are two main settings for drug & alcohol treatment: Outpatient and in-patient (residential rehab). Please read our page, Make a Decision for Rehab, to learn more about these two types of drug & alcohol treatment settings.
