Starting the Alcohol Treatment
The abuse of alcohol and its consequence of addiction have been eating away at the very fabric of society life for centuries. Treatment centers, through treating the addict and alcoholic, have helped to free many people from addiction and help reduce the burden of addiction on society. Treatment has several components, but on top of the list comes the determination to get treated and a genuine desire to leave the behavior of heavy drinking and drug abuse.
The Steps involved in Alcohol Treatment:
Alcohol treatment consist of steps such as:
– Wanting to get help, and locating a treatment center that’s right for you
– Initial assessment counseling before commencement of the treatment
– Detox, if needed
– Individual and group counseling during the treatment
– Optimally: Learning stress management techniques; exercise programs; a nutritious diet
– Aftercare and continued support
The Significance of Counseling in Alcohol Treatment
The initiative of the person seeking treatment needs to be supported through expert guidance and counseling to make the idea more concrete and the related process understood.
Multiple sittings with experts may be required at the therapy center with specialists. There are two types of counseling, i.e., individual and group. Individual counseling involves conversation between therapist and client in a closed environment, where individual issues are discussed, solutions are sought and found, and action plans are made. Group discussion consists of clients and therapist interacting in a group. Group therapy is beneficial for various reasons, including helping clients see that there are others who share the same problems due to addiction; skills for recovery can be learned through sharing; it helps to tell your life’s story for recovery, and a group offers the setting for telling your life’s story; the group provides an outlet and medium for “getting things off your chest” that you’ve kept inside about things you have done during your addiction; groups provide positive peer support and pressure to abstain from drinking and drugging.
Inpatient or Outpatient Alcohol Treatment
Getting treatment for addiction on an in- or out-patient basis depends on need (level of addiction) and individual resources, i.e., time and money. Inpatient centers are needed for moderate to severe addiction, providing an environment away from many triggers, e.g., people, places, and things, and an environment of continuous care.
Is Detox a Must During Alcohol Treatment?
NO. Not all substance dependent persons need detox treatment. Detox is sometimes needed depending on the type of substance abused, the amount of alcohol or drug used over time, and how severe withdrawal will be. The detox process helps to reduce symptoms of withdrawal through the use of proper medication. With certain substances, such as alcohol and tranquilizers, suddenly stopping use can cause physical harm to the body, even death. A medically supervised detox is recommended anytime detox is needed.
