<h2>What is Alcohol Relapse?</h2>
Relapse is a return to substance use after a period of abstinence.6 Recovery from alcohol misuse involves creating new habits and addressing feelings that may have been ignored for a long time. <a href="https://alcoholrehab.com/alcohol-treatment/admissions/">Rehab treatment</a> often focuses on recognizing and understanding these emotions and other internal and external triggers that have previously been coped with by drinking or using drugs. Treatment also helps people in recovery develop new coping skills to deal with difficult emotions or stress when they arise. 7  Experiencing a relapse does not mean that your recovery has failed.4 The Journal of the American Medical Association reports that 40% to 60% of people who seek treatment for substance abuse will relapse within 1 year.
<h2>Alcohol Relapse Prevention</h2>
A relapse is not necessarily a sudden decision. Warning signs may occur for days, weeks, or even months before a person ultimately makes the decision to use alcohol, again.7

However, in addition to what you learned about your drinking patterns and triggers during treatment, there are some general ways you can prepare for a potential relapse.  These strategies may include:1
<ul>
 	<li>Reaching out for help when you are struggling or feeling isolated.</li>
 	<li><a href="https://alcoholrehab.com/12-steps-aa/">Attending a support group like AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) or SMART Recovery</a>.</li>
 	<li>Engaging in self-care activities like working out, breathing exercises, yoga, or meditation.</li>
 	<li>Establishing healthy boundaries with your family, friends, and others in your social group.</li>
 	<li>Rehearsing potentially triggering situations or finding alternatives to people, places, things, associated with drinking.</li>
 	<li>Working with a medical professional to manage medications.</li>
 	<li>Participating in evidence-based therapy for alcohol use disorder.</li>
 	<li>Working to improve your nutrition and other physical health habits.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Stages of Relapse</h2>
Addiction medicine physician Steven Melemis explains in his research that relapse tends to be a gradual process with three stages.5
<ol>
 	<li>Emotional Relapse. During the emotional stage, it does not necessarily mean a person is thinking about using alcohol again, but they may be neglecting self-care and their coping strategies. For example, isolating, not reaching out for support, and bottling up emotions.</li>
 	<li>Mental Relapse. During a mental relapse, a person may fantasize about drinking alcohol. This creates an internal struggle and bargaining where they may minimize the consequences of using drugs or alcohol to justify using again.</li>
 	<li>Physical Relapse. At this point, drinking alcohol/or drug use begins and soon escalates to an uncontrollable level.</li>
</ol>
<h2>Triggers for Alcohol Relapse</h2>
One of the biggest indicators someone might be headed for relapse is when they abandon the new behaviors learned in early recovery, which can make you vulnerable to triggers.7

 The various reasons that caused you to misuse alcohol in the first place may likely still be triggers. For example, living near a bar or a place where you used to drink, being in a relationship with someone who is still using alcohol or other substances are risk factors that may trigger a relapse .5

Common triggers may also include:
<ul>
 	<li>Withdrawal symptoms.</li>
 	<li>Chronic stress.</li>
 	<li>Certain people or places.</li>
 	<li>Peer Pressure</li>
 	<li>Relationship problems.</li>
 	<li>Financial stress.</li>
 	<li>Uncomfortable emotions, such as loneliness, anger, and anxiety.</li>

<h2>What Happens After an Alcohol Relapse?</h2>
Treatment of chronic diseases, such as alcohol use disorder, involves changing deeply rooted behaviors, and relapse doesn’t mean treatment has failed. 7 When a person recovering from an addiction experiences a relapse, it’s important to communicate with your doctor. Treatment may need to be modified, added or otherwise adjusted.7

Having feelings of regret, shame, or guilt after a relapse is not uncommon, and while it’s important to acknowledge those feelings, it’s also important to move on and get back on track. 5 It may also be helpful to talk to the people in your support system (family, friends, and sponsors).6
<h2>Treatment for Alcohol Relapse</h2>
Stopping alcohol or drug use is just one part of a long and complex recovery process. When people enter treatment, addiction has often caused serious consequences in their lives. 7 Behavioral therapies help people in addiction treatment modify their attitudes and behaviors related to substance abuse. As a result, they can learn healthier ways to handle stressful situations and other triggers that might cause a relapse. Behavioral therapies used in the treatment of AUD and that may be helpful for those experiencing a relapse include: 7
<ul>
 	<li>Cognitive-behavioral therapy. This helps patients recognize, avoid, and cope with the situations in which they're most likely to use alcohol or drugs.</li>
 	<li>Contingency management. Positive reinforcement is encouraged, such as providing rewards or privileges for remaining substance free, for attending and participating in counseling sessions, or for taking treatment medications as prescribed.</li>
 	<li>Motivational enhancement therapy.  This type of therapy uses strategies to make the most of people's readiness to change their behavior and enter treatment.</li>
 	<li>Twelve-step facilitation (TSF).  Typically delivered in 12 weekly sessions, this helps to prepare people to become engaged in 12-step mutual support programs. 12-step programs, like Alcoholic Anonymous, are not medical treatments, but provide social and complementary support to those treatments. TSF follows the 12-step themes of acceptance, surrender, and active involvement in recovery.</li>
</ul>
Furthermore, it’s important to remember you are not alone, about half of people who seek treatment for substance abuse experience a relapse. 7<a href="https://alcoholrehab.com/alcohol-treatment/types-of-treatment/decide-for-rehab/"> Re-entering a treatment program can help you</a> to again stop using alcohol and reduce the risk of future relapses.7,8

<h2>Signs and Symptoms of Depression</h2>
Depression is one of the most common mental health diagnoses as it affects approximately 280 million people globally. 4 There are several different types of depression that are distinguished by the frequency, duration, onset, and severity of symptoms.3  A mental health or medical provider can assess for these different types of depression to help clarify your treatment plan. Although there are many types of depressive disorders, common symptoms include:3  
<ul>
 	<li>Sadness or feelings of emptiness</li>
 	<li>Easily annoyed and irritated</li>
 	<li>Loss of interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed</li>
 	<li>Decreased energy and lack of motivation to participate in normal daily functions</li>
 	<li>Changes to appetite: not feeling hungry, not eating enough, or eating too much</li>
 	<li>Difficulty with sleep: trouble getting to sleep, staying asleep, or oversleeping</li>
 	<li>Feeling inappropriately guilty</li>
 	<li>Psychomotor agitation: restless movements that serve no purpose such as tapping or fidgeting.</li>
 	<li>Feelings of worthlessness</li>
 	<li>Suicidal thoughts</li>
</ul>
If you are feeling suicidal, it’s important to talk to your doctor or mental health provider. If the suicidal feelings escalate, seek help by calling 911 or going to your local emergency room.
<h2>What is Depression?</h2>
Depression is classified as a mood disorder and has many different sub-types.3 In order to make a clinical diagnosis for a depressive disorder, a trained medical or mental health clinician must assess symptoms, duration, frequency, onset, and make sure the individual meets the diagnostic criteria for the specific depressive disorder.3 Common types of depressive disorders include: 2,3,4
<ul>
 	<li>Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). With MDD, specific symptoms of depression must be present for at least 2 weeks in duration to meet the diagnostic criteria. Symptoms of depression must interfere with your daily living, meaning they affect your personal life, professional life and day-to-day living.</li>
 	<li>Persistent Depressive Disorder. This causes less severe symptoms than major depression, but symptoms are present for a longer duration (at least two years in duration).</li>
 	<li>Postpartum Depression (perinatal depression). This type of depression occurs during pregnancy or immediately after birth, during the postpartum period, and if severe enough, some women can have psychotic symptoms.</li>
 	<li>Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). People can experience depressive symptoms due to seasonal changes, such as lack of exposure to daylight. While it can occur any time of year, it typically begins in the fall or early winter and improves in the spring or summer.</li>
 	<li>Psychotic Depression, also known as depression with psychosis. This is a severe form of depression where people experience psychotic symptoms with depression. Psychotic symptoms include hallucinations (seeing, hearing, feeling, or smelling things that aren’t there) or delusions (believing things that aren’t true).</li>
 	<li>Bipolar Disorder. This is also classified under the category of mood disorders, which is the same category as depression, however bipolar disorder, also called bipolar depression or manic depression is characterized by episodes of mania that alternate with periods of depression.</li>
 	<li>Medication- or substance-induced depression. This is a type of depression where depressive symptoms emerge during or soon after exposure to a substance (i.e., intoxication) or medication or while experiencing withdrawal symptoms from a substance or medication.</li>
</ul>
<h2>The Link Between Depression and Alcohol: Trauma, Genetics and Social Environments</h2>
Alcohol misuse is a pattern of unhealthy alcohol consumption that can be harmful to your health and relationships. People who misuse alcohol to the extent that they cannot control their alcohol consumption, despite the negative consequences may be diagnosed with an <a href="https://alcoholrehab.com/alcoholism/signs-of-alcoholism/am-an-alcoholic/">Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD).</a>

Alcohol use and mental health conditions are frequently seen together but can also occur independently of each other.6

Although several risk factors have been identified for depressive disorders, depression or alcohol use disorder can occur in anyone. Not everyone who experiences risk factors will develop a depressive disorder, but risk factors can play a role in its development. These risk factors may include, post-traumatic stress disorder, genetics, certain medications, your social and physical environment.1,2,3,6

Even if you are not diagnosed with PTSD, past traumatic experiences such as emotional abuse, life-threatening accidents, war, neglect, or sexual abuse might increase your risk of developing AUD and depression.3  For many people, these experiences have a negative impact and can be hard to process through alone, without therapy, and as a result, people may tend to misuse alcohol to numb these past traumatic events and associated negative feelings. These traumatic events can also lead to depression, especially if the individual does not have the correct coping mechanisms or social support. Self-medicating with alcohol or other substances, to alleviate or cope with these experiences or other pre-existing symptoms is a common link between depression and alcohol use disorder .7  Consequently, <a href="https://alcoholrehab.com/drug-addiction/treatment/medical-detoxification/">withdrawing from certain substances</a> like alcohol might increase depressive symptoms, as withdrawal symptoms can leave one feeling sad, exhausted and irritable.3

Your social and physical environment can influence your susceptibility towards AUD and depression.3  Environments such as college, high-stress professions, stress within your personal or family life can all trigger feelings of wanting to misuse alcohol to alleviate the stress or numb the pain of depression.

For instance, being in a college setting and drinking in excess is normalized within American society and symptoms of depression often go unnoticed and untreated, especially among college students who are struggling.8  College is when the heaviest drinking is reported and the typical age of students is when they are at the highest risk of developing AUD.8  For many people in this age range, moving away from their parents, the stress of higher academic achievement and peer pressure combined can increase the risk of developing either depression or AUD or both.8 

Stress at work or stress within your personal life can also contribute to feelings of depression and the need to misuse alcohol to numb the stress.

For others, there may be a family history of AUD or depression that can increase your likelihood of developing a disorder.3  

The etiology, or cause of diagnosis, is similar among both AUD and depression.7  There is no definitive cause for either AUD or depression instead, risk factors can increase your likelihood of developing either of these disorders.3  Alcohol may initially alleviate the symptoms of depression but can lead to a pattern of misusing alcohol, while an alcohol use disorder (AUD) can increase the risk of depression, as prolonged alcohol misuse can disrupt the brain chemistry causing depressive symptoms.7 

It’s important to note that the co-occurrence of AUD and depressive disorders, specifically major depressive disorder, and persistent depressive disorder with AUD, is associated with greater severity and worse prognosis than either disorder alone. This includes a heightened risk for suicidal behavior.6
<h2>Co-occurring Alcoholism and Depression Treatment</h2>
<a href="https://alcoholrehab.com/alcohol-treatment/types-of-treatment/">Treatment often includes an integrated approach</a> to address both alcohol use disorder and depression.  Because each person is unique, treatment will be tailored to your specific needs.  Some of the treatments for co-occurring depression and AUD can include1,8,9
<ul>
 	<li><a href="https://alcoholrehab.com/alcohol-treatment/types-of-treatment/alcohol-detox/">Medical Detox</a>. Medical Detox is usually the first step in the recovery process followed by entry into a formal rehabilitation program. Detox helps you safely and comfortably withdraw from alcohol.</li>
 	<li>Antidepressants/Medications. You may receive antidepressants, which can help treat both the depression and some symptoms of AUD. In addition, you may receive naltrexone, a medication that helps people stop drinking and reduces depressive symptoms. Disulfiram and acamprosate can also be used to help curb alcohol cravings and abstain from alcohol.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This helps you learn positive coping mechanisms to replace the thought and behavioral patterns that can contribute to or worsen AUD and depression.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). This type of therapy is mainly used to help reduce self-harm and suicidal behavior.</li>
 	<li>Behavioral Activation. Behavioral Activation is a therapy that is effective for both AUD and depression. It involves developing an understanding of how negative life experiences and behaviors influence your mood and emotions and encourages you to take an active approach to increase your positive life experiences.</li>
 	<li><a href="https://alcoholrehab.com/alcohol-recovery/aftercare/">Mutual support groups. </a>Support groups include 12-step groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and non-12-step groups like SMART Recovery. These groups are effective both as treatment and as aftercare for both AUD and depression. You’ll benefit from the support of others who know what it’s like to be in your shoes, which can lessen feelings of isolation and help you feel connected.</li>
</ul>

Alcohol and Depression: The Link Between Depression and Alcohol Use

If you’re ready to start <a href="/alcoholism">alcohol addiction</a> treatment, you now have to figure out what that will look like for you. There’s no standardized treatment plan since every person has unique needs. Rehab isn’t “one size fits all” and many aspects of treatment, including the duration of your rehab program will depend on your individual needs, requirements, and treatment goals.1 Read more about what different addiction rehab treatments are available for you.
<h2>How Long Is Inpatient Rehab?</h2>
Inpatient treatment, also known as residential treatment, has different program lengths .1 Factors that can influence how long you stay in treatment include:2 
<ul>
 	<li>The severity and extent of substance use.</li>
 	<li>Substance(s) used and the length of time you used them.</li>
 	<li>Other mental and physical health concerns.</li>
 	<li>Insurance coverage.</li>
 	<li>Social support and your current home/living environment.</li>
</ul>
These factors and more will help you and your doctor <a href="/alcohol-treatment/types-of-treatment/decide-for-rehab/">choose a rehab program that is right for you</a>. In general, research indicates that better treatment outcomes are associated with longer durations of treatment. This treatment can be inpatient or outpatient, or a combination of the two, or even attending regularly scheduled 12-step meetings. The length of treatment should be the appropriate length of time to achieve your treatment goals, that you are engaged in treatment, and complete treatment..3,4 

Rehab is not a “one size fits all” solution; rather, it’s made up of different elements tailored to help you when and where you most need it. This may include detox services, counseling and behavioral therapy, and other medical care. For some, shorter treatment options provide more accessibility and flexibility while others might find longer treatment lengths helpful to maintain their recovery.
<h3>28- and 30-Day Rehab Programs</h3>
Short-term 28- and <a href="/alcohol-treatment/types-of-treatment/30-day-program/">30-day</a> inpatient, or residential, rehab programs can be an affordable treatment option.  These shorter programs are typically based on a modified 12-step program.1 

You may wish to talk to your doctor about which option will work best depending on your recovery needs and goals. While research has shown that, in general, longer durations of treatment are associated with the best outcomes, a short-term program may be the only option for some depending on their social support, home life, financial resources, and employment.9

After completing a short-term inpatient rehab program, many people continue their recovery with outpatient rehab, individual counseling or therapy sessions, or free peer-support groups (<a href="/12-steps-aa/">Alcoholics Anonymous</a>, Narcotics Anonymous, SMART Recovery), which can help <a href="/alcohol-recovery/aftercare/risk-of-relapse/">reduce the risk of relapse</a>.1 
<h3> 60-Day Rehab Programs</h3>
Compared to 30-day rehab programs, 60-day inpatient, or residential, programs allow more time to invest in your recovery. By staying in a treatment program for a longer period of time, you can continue to make progress on your treatment goals, including examining your triggers (the people, places, and things that make you want to drink) as well as learning and practicing new ways of thinking and coping, which will help to direct you to healthier behaviors—ones that aren’t associated with drinking or taking.1 These skills are typically learned through intensive individual and group counseling sessions over the duration of the 60 days.4 
<h3>90-Day Rehab Programs</h3>
Since alcohol addiction is a complex and chronic, relapsing disease (meaning you may start to use alcohol again after a period of not using), some people find longer-term treatment options helpful to maintain their recovery.1 Studies show that longer treatment durations are associated with better treatment outcomes. 1,3 

Long-term rehab programs may be a good fit for people with more severe addiction concerns or those who have co-occurring disorders, like a mental health diagnosis.4 Depending on facility and availability, some centers may offer rehab stays for longer than 90 days.
<h2>What to Look for in Rehab Centers</h2>
There are a couple of key factors to consider when <a href="/alcohol-treatment/types-of-treatment/">looking for a rehab program</a>. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) recommends finding a treatment center that offers a combination of the following:4 
<ul>
 	<li>Medical care</li>
 	<li>Mental health services</li>
 	<li>Family services</li>
 	<li>Educational resources</li>
 	<li>Job services</li>
 	<li>HIV/AIDS testing and treatment</li>
 	<li>Legal services</li>
</ul>
Long-term rehab programs aren’t accessible to everyone. Even if you aren’t able to commit to long-term rehab, recovery is still possible. Short-term outpatient treatment, community support groups, and behavioral therapy are a few other lower-intensity options that can help treat alcohol addiction.1 

With so many treatment types, lengths of stay, and levels of care, it can be hard to decide which one is right for you. When making your treatment decision, you may want to talk with your doctor or a mental health professional. They can give insight into what type of treatment will benefit you most. Every person is unique and will need a slightly different set of interventions.1 
<h3>Questions to Ask a Rehab Center</h3>
A part of your rehab search can include asking questions before committing to a program. Interview a few facilities to ensure you feel comfortable with the quality of treatment you’re getting. Some questions you may want to ask include:5

 	<li>How soon will I be able to begin treatment?1</li>
 	<li>Can you give me an approximate cost for the program?</li>
 	<li>Will insurance cover some or all these costs?</li>
 	<li>Is your rehab center accredited?</li>
 	<li>What are some of the qualifications of the professionals that work there?</li>
 	<li>Are you able to prescribe medications, if needed?</li>
 	<li>What is your treatment approach for alcohol use disorders?</li>
 	<li>Do you offer help for co-occurring disorders?</li>
 	<li>After completing treatment, what kind of support is available for me?</li>
</ul>
<h2>Does Insurance Cover Alcohol Rehab?</h2>
In most cases, <a href="/insurance-coverage/">insurance should help cover the cost of alcohol rehab</a>. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), individual and small group health insurance plans sold through the Marketplace must cover both mental health and substance use services. Further, limits for addiction services can’t be more restrictive than other medical or surgical services.6,7
