Alcohol Detox Methods & Advantages
Prolonged and extensive consumption of alcohol not only results in immediate adverse effects but the long-term after-effects are also equally, if not, more dangerous. Though immediate effects can be easily seen and treated, long term effects will need extended treatments. Since alcohol’s effects and residues are retained in the body, it is sometimes necessary to conduct a detox at the beginning of a rehab process.
Once a chronic alcoholic tries to stop drinking, his mind, which is attuned to the effects, will induce cravings which will force him to drink. On his own he will, perhaps, never be able to stop. Under the controlled environment and medical supervision of the detox process, this is made possible.
Advantages of Alcohol Detox
Alcohol detox is very advantageous for chronic alcoholics. Once the patient has decided to be treated for his alcohol addiction, purification of the body and mind is the most important aspect of the overall treatment. With the use of proper drugs, the body is detoxified, and with appropriate counseling, the mind is strengthened to deal with any future desires and cravings for alcohol. The detoxification is also very important to reduce alcohol withdrawal symptoms.
Challenges of Alcohol Detox
Getting into the habit of alcohol consumption is quite easy. However, coming out of it is very difficult. Expert doctors mostly advise an alcohol rehabilitation program, with proper alcohol detox if needed. Detox helps the person who has a history of heavy drinking deal the withdrawal process. The Benzodiazepine family of drugs are mostly commonly used for alcohol detox. Detoxification should always be carried out under expert medical supervision.
Methods of Alcohol Detox
Though it appears to be a simple process, still the implications can be dangerous if it is not carried out correctly under expert surveillance. There are three ways to carry out the alcohol detox procedure as mentioned below.
• Baseline Method – In this case, small amounts of Benzodiazepine is injected in the patient to observe the tolerance level. Once the patient starts feeling light sedation, baseline of the drug is identified and from there the proper treatment starts. The baseline may vary from patient to patient depending on the physical condition and early medical history.
• Standard Method – In this case, a standard dosage of Benzodiazepine is used depending on the patient’s history and then adjusted based on withdrawal.
• Defer the Treatment – In this case, the treatment is deferred until the patient starts exhibiting withdrawal symptoms.
Detox is that vital specialized process that not only flushes out toxins but also revitalizes organs and tissues of the alcoholic, resulting in a clearer mind and emergence of a noticeably fitter person.
