Our society promotes the idea of exercising self-confidence and willpower to overcome adversity, and there is <em>some</em> truth to that thought.

However, when it comes to alcohol addiction, you must first surrender your idea of self-will to gain power over it. It sounds like an oxymoron at first glance, but it is similar to the idea of letting go of someone you love to really “keep” them. You must let go of trying to use your own strength to win the battle against alcohol and surrender to the powerlessness of it. Then you will have the power to overcome it.
<h3>What Does Unmanageable Mean?</h3>
When alcohol begins to invade your life, it creeps in slowly and eventually starts taking over every aspect of your life. It affects the body, relationships, work, finances, home life, and happiness. When alcohol continues to be a part of your daily habit, you will notice that your life is starting to fall apart, and important things feel out of control. While everyone’s experience is different, here are a few examples:

 	<li>You are experiencing hangovers regularly.</li>
 	<li>You have health issues due to drinking.</li>

 	<li>Do I accept that I can’t get “control” over my drinking alone?</li>
 	<li>Am I READY and WILLING to do what it takes to stay sober?</li>
</ul>
<h3>Speak Up During an AA Meeting</h3>
When you first join AA, you will introduce yourself and may choose to repeat Step 1 as a way to get started. Acknowledging that you have an alcohol problem shows others and yourself that you are serious about getting help.

During AA meetings, participants are given a chance to speak to the group about their struggles and challenges. They can also speak about where they are on their journey of sobriety—whether they are just starting or have been sober for years.

Speaking in front of others might feel intimidating at first. It’s important to do, though, for a variety of reasons. For one thing, admitting to the group and verbalizing your lack of control over your alcoholism can solidify this fact in your mind.

Alcoholism affects the body and mind. For example, when you get to the second step, you can focus your attention on what a <em>higher power</em> can do for you regarding the alcohol issue. In other words, you will be concentrating on the positive results as opposed to asking yourself what or who the higher power is.

The main point of accessing a higher power is to get you to think about how, although you may be helpless in yourself to overcome drinking, you are not alone. You have help and strength outside of your own personal strength.

The main takeaway from this stage in recovery is that you can move forward in recovery with a foundation of open-mindedness, willingness, faith, trust, and humility.
<h2>Ways to Follow the Second Step of AA</h2>
No matter what step you are on in the 12-step program, it's vital to have a plan to hold yourself accountable. People use varying methods and strategies to accomplish this goal. One effective way is to engage in self-reflection. You can do this by asking yourself a series of questions that probes the second of the 12 steps. Here are a few sample questions to get you started, but remember, you can personalize your own questions if you want.

 	<li>Did you engage in negative and harmful behaviors when you were drinking or in the midst of your addiction?</li>

 	<li>What does "believing in something" mean to you?</li>
 	<li>Do you relate to other recovering alcohol addicts' experiences about how they came to believe?</li>
 	<li>Is there anything hindering you from accepting that there is a power/powers greater than yourself?</li>
 	<li>Have you witnessed a "higher power" at work in your life?</li>
 	<li>Do you have a closed mind when it comes to your recovery? If so, do you see the harm that it can do? If not, how is an open mind manifesting in your life?</li>
</ul>
<h3>Think About What Inspires You to Stay Sober</h3>
As you embark upon this step, you can take time to think about what inspires you to stay sober. People have different ways to keep inspired for their recovery efforts. For many people, faith is a big part of the inspiration to keep them sober. Some people look to God and religion as a motivation for long-term recovery. God is their higher power who helps them through the difficulties of the journey of sobriety.

Other people may not go to church or have that type of faith, so they find inspiration to quit drinking alcohol from other sources outside of themselves. They may look to family, like their parents or children, as a motivation for their journey. Some people might even find inspiration from a celebrity who has found success in quitting alcohol. Whatever your path is to sobriety, you can make it your own. Everyone is different in how they find the motivation and inspiration to seek a sober pathway.

<h3>Talk With AA Members and Sponsors</h3>
Whenever you are going through a difficult situation, it helps to have someone to talk to. Even if you think you don't want to talk or aren't good at it, you'll likely feel a sense of relief after opening up. Talking things out is a good tonic for the soul. At AA meetings, you will have the opportunity to grow and learn with a sponsor. A sponsor is someone who will walk beside you during your journey and someone to whom you can talk.<sup>1</sup>

If you're religious, you will probably be doing a lot of talking to God too, and that can bring relief. For those individuals who aren't religious, it's up to them how they handle that. However, everyone gets a sponsor to help newcomers in managing the steps. Sponsors have been in your shoes before, meaning they, too, have battled alcohol addiction.<sup>1</sup> They know what you are going through, so they will be a supportive shoulder on which to lean.

The sponsor isn't the only person you'll have to reach out to. You will be surrounded by other group members who are taking these steps alongside you. Some of them will have the same or similar beliefs as you do when it comes to a belief in a higher power. The other members will provide additional support for you as you discover just what this step means to you.
<h3>Have an Open Mind</h3>
Open-mindedness is a difficult thing to accomplish for some people. Some people may be so used to seeing things in one way that they can't open their minds to a new way. Or, they could have what's called "black and white" or "all or none" thinking. These types of thought patterns restrict a person from growth and seeing new ideas that could help them overcome issues. By purposing in your heart that you will open your mind to the journey and to learning new ideas, you expand your heart and your possibilities. As you come to accept that you are unable to control your alcohol consumption on your own, it can help you to lean more heavily on the second step in the 12-step program.
<h2>Getting Help With Step 2 of the 12-Steps</h2>

Step 2 of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

Recovering from alcohol addiction and achieving long-term alcohol abstinence requires a structured treatment plan. You can be successful in your efforts by implementing a treatment plan that has been shown to work. The Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program has been proven to be successful in helping people stay on the path on their journey to sobriety. The 12-step process guides participants through the recovery process incrementally by taking them through a series of clearly defined steps. Each step addresses a different need that is common to people who struggle with alcoholism.

The fourth step involves taking a personal inventory of your personal character strengths and weaknesses. This article discusses step 4 and its importance in your recovery.
<h2>What Is Step 4 of AA?</h2>
Step 4 of the 12 steps of AA is about looking inward. The other 3 steps up to this point involved admitting your powerlessness over the addiction and giving up your will to a higher power. Now, it's time to for the fourth step—inventory of self. Self-inventory requires naming things within you that you may not have thought much about in the past.

When you look within, you must also consider things that trigger inner emotions and outward behaviors. It can bring up memories of painful situations, but it is an important part of the healing process.

The exact wording of Step 4 of AA is as follows:<sup>1</sup>

<em>"Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves."</em>

Step 4 helps you get to the root causes of your alcohol addiction. Once you understand yourself better and know what is driving your decisions and urges to drink alcohol, you can get a better hold on the addiction itself.

Sometimes the root causes need to be addressed with further counseling or therapy. For now, though, your only concern is looking inward for a deeper self-discovery. You may discover weaknesses in your character or personality that contribute to alcohol use. Although it might be challenging to face this and admit these weaknesses, there is no shame in doing so—everyone has weaknesses and strengths. When we understand ourselves better, we can be stronger in overcoming alcohol addiction.

This fourth step also requires humility and honesty, which are just as essential for you now as they will be in the ongoing journey of alcohol abstinence.
<h2>AA Fourth Step Inventory Process</h2>
As you begin the inventory process, it's important to prepare your mind for an honest assessment of your character assets. During Step 4, you want to identify the following:
<ul>
 	<li>Negative thinking patterns that drive your behavior</li>
 	<li>Negative emotions</li>
 	<li>Destructive behavior toward yourself or others</li>
 	<li>Blaming others for your behavior</li>
 	<li>Justifying your behavior</li>
</ul>
It may be challenging at first to address some of these issues and admit them to yourself. It's common for people to deny their actions or justify their behaviors. Some people blame difficult life circumstances for their drinking habits. Other people might justify their actions by thinking that they don't drink as much as someone else or behave as badly as someone else they know when they drink.

These justifications and denials may be common, but they are also not helpful and will impede your progress. During step 4 of the AA 12 Steps, it's time to take responsibility for all your past and current actions.
<h3>How to Do Inventory</h3>
Now it's time to put Step 4 of AA into practice. You will work with a sponsor as you begin your self-inventory. You can start by getting a notebook and listing different emotions, such as sadness, regret, anger, shame, and hurt, at the top of each page. You should list any others that are important to you as well. Underneath each emotion, write down all the things that trigger that emotion, such as people, places, ideas, beliefs, experiences, institutions, circumstances, and so on.

Cataloging your emotions could lead to some painful memories or feelings. However, a sponsor will be by your side to work with you. Your sponsor will do everything in their power to be there to help you get sober and stay sober.<sup>2</sup> They will be with you every step of the way as you are taking your self-inventory. Having been through this same process themselves, they understand what you're going through and can provide insight and advice.

Sometimes people avoid listing certain things because it's too painful or embarrassing, or they feel great shame over it. Keep in mind that your sponsor and others in AA have probably had similar experiences and so it's critical to be as thorough and honest as you can because that is what makes this step so effective for healing.

 	<li>How do you envision a healthy relationship?</li>
 	<li>Do you have any secrets that you haven't told anyone or written about in your step work?</li>

Step 4 of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)

Now that you have completed the ninth step of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), you're ready to take on the next step in your alcohol recovery journey. You are going to be working through step 10 of the 12-step AA program. In the previous steps, you made amends for past wrongs, but that is not the end of the program.<sup>1</sup> You will move forward with the 10th step inventory, which involves continuing to take accountability for past wrongs by admitting those wrongs.<sup>2</sup>
<h2>What Is Step 10 of AA?</h2>
The 10th step inventory consists of acknowledging past wrongs and admitting those injuries and wrongs. This takes courage, perseverance, and continual self-assessment. The exact wording of step 10 AA is as follows:<sup>2</sup>

<em>"Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it."</em>

Continuing the AA journey means you are committed to a life of honesty, self-discipline, and accountability.<sup>2</sup> It also fosters trust—trust in yourself—and encourages others to trust and believe in you, too. As you face up to past wrongs and take responsibility for them, it will bring peace and inner reconciliation, and it also shows others that you can be trusted to own up to your faults.<sup>2</sup>

By now, you have gained tremendous strength from finishing the other previous 9 steps, so doing this step may not be as challenging for you as the step seemed when you first started out. However, it will involve deep introspection and reflection about the past and your current behavior.<sup>2</sup> You will need to be more aware of your actions and how they affect others. When you have a lifestyle heavily involving alcohol, it's easy to overlook how your behavior is impacting those around you.<sup>2</sup> Although it may be difficult to admit, you need to assess how your behavior and actions may be harmful and hurtful to yourself and other individuals.<sup>2</sup> By stepping forward and taking responsibility for these actions, you can make progress in changing the behavior. Awareness is a key component to change.

As you begin to look inward and outward and contemplate how your actions have harmed others, it's also critical that you don't dwell too much on the negativity of this.<sup>2</sup> In other words, don't be too hard on yourself. If you focus too much on feeling bad about it, you won't be able to learn from the experience and focus on the positive results that come from keeping yourself accountable.
<h2>How to Do the 10th Step in AA</h2>
When you think of how to do the 10th step in AA, you must realize that this journey is an ongoing process.<sup>2</sup> Every day, people who are recovering from alcoholism will face temptations that will test their ability to remain emotionally stable and remain sober.<sup>2</sup> This is a challenging task, and sometimes the battle is stronger than at other times.

It's recommended that participants review step 4's self-inventory list as they begin with step 10 of AA. This is helpful in showing you where you might have particular weaknesses and difficulties. After reviewing that, you should take an inventory at the end of each day to help you stay on track. During your daily inventory, take note of any instances when you were resentful, dishonest, harmful to anybody, and so on.<sup>1</sup> Although this part of the inventory is focused on the negative aspects of your day, don't let it end there. If you faced a particularly hard situation that day and didn't respond how you normally would have but instead reacted with humility, forgiveness, or grace, take note of that accomplishment.<sup>1</sup> It's an excellent sign of positive growth. Through noting both the positive and negative, you can see how you reacted or are reacting at times and compare with the way you want to react.<sup>1</sup> That way, you can become more proficient at figuring out when you have acted in harmful ways. By practicing this 10th step inventory, you will be more aware of how others feel, think, and act.
<h3>Questions to Help With 10th Step Inventory</h3>
When participants are doing their daily self-inventory, they might feel stuck at times—like they don't know where to start or end when tackling the self-inventory. It helps to ask yourself questions that stimulate thought.<sup>3</sup> These questions can serve as a prompt for brainstorming the daily inventory. Here are a sample set of questions you can use, but feel free to add or subtract to this list as fits your own experiences:
<ul>
 	<li>Do I recognize the difference between my feelings and my actions?</li>
 	<li>Do I understand that I may not be able to control my feelings, but I can control my actions?</li>
 	<li>Have there been times during recovery that I didn't realize I was wrong until later? How did I come to realize it? What were these wrongs?</li>
 	<li>In what ways do my "wrongs" affect my life? How do they affect the lives of others?</li>
 	<li>What is the purpose of the 10<sup>th</sup> step of AA?</li>
 	<li>What does promptly admitting that you were "wrong" mean to you?</li>
 	<li>Do I ever feel uncomfortable about acknowledging my positive accomplishments?</li>
 	<li>Do I ever feel uncomfortable acknowledging the wrongs I have done to others?</li>
 	<li>Is Step 10 making me live life any differently? If so, how?</li>
 	<li>Am I aware of any lingering habits of behavior in my life today? If so, what are they?</li>
 	<li>Have I been bitter, angry, selfish, or dishonest?</li>
 	<li>Do I have a lot of fears about the future?</li>
 	<li>Am I expecting myself to be perfect or setting myself up for disappointment?</li>
 	<li>Do I worry a lot about the past or the future?</li>
 	<li>Am I practicing self-care?</li>
 	<li>Do I take things too seriously in any part of my life?</li>
 	<li>Do I suffer from a physical, mental, or spiritual problem?</li>
 	<li>Have I kept any secret that I should have discussed with my sponsor?</li>
 	<li>Is there some action I did today that I regret? If so, what was it?</li>
 	<li>Was there some action that I wish I would have done today? What was it?</li>
 	<li>Did I experience any relationship conflicts today? What were they?</li>
 	<li>Am I keeping integrity in all my personal relationships with others?</li>
 	<li>Have I harmed anyone today, either directly or indirectly? If so, how?</li>
 	<li>Have I harmed myself today? If so, how?</li>
 	<li>Do I owe anyone an apology?</li>
 	<li>If I could do today over again, how would I change it and do things differently?</li>
 	<li>Did I stay sober today? If not, was there something that triggered my use?</li>
 	<li>What did I do to be of service to others today?</li>
</ul>

Now that you’ve been on your journey for 10 of the 12 steps in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), you are ready to begin step 11. AA is a path to recovery from alcohol, and during this step, you will be encouraged to go deeper into your life of spirituality. You will begin to explore how your life has a purpose and a plan, as does everyone’s life. Each person is unique and special, and through this 11<sup>th</sup> step, prayer and meditation can help you can find purpose in your life to move forward.<sup>1</sup>

The Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) program is an excellent program that guides people into a pathway of sobriety. Through admitting past wrongs, making amends, and acknowledging a higher power, participants improve their quality of life.<sup>1</sup>
<h2>What Is Step 11 of AA?</h2>
Step 11 of AA involves participants finding help, purpose, and power in their present and future life by practicing prayer and meditation. The exact wording of step 11 is as follows:<sup>1</sup>

<em>“Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.”</em>

During this step, you will be creating a solid foundation for your future, as you are almost to the end of the 12-step program.<sup>1</sup> This step will take you deeper into a peaceful and fulfilled life by helping you to find greater meaning for your life.<sup>1</sup> Some people who have led a life of alcoholism may mistakenly think that due to their past actions, they cannot have a fulfilling or beautiful future. However, in the 11th step prayer and meditation will show you how every life has great value and wonderful purpose.<sup>1</sup> No matter what your past was like, you are now looking forward and entering a new phase of life—a new beginning.<sup>1</sup> That means you have a new opportunity to make something wonderful out of your life. This step is where you will seek for that purpose, which is God’s will for your life. You’ll also need your higher power to assist you in carrying out that purpose because, as you’ve learned, you cannot achieve your goals alone.

Recovery offers a time for you to be continuously developing in every way—physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. With exposure to new situations and new people, you have had opportunities to put into practice all the skills and steps you’ve learned prior to this, especially as it relates to dealing with people. You’ve also improved your physical health as you are living a sober life day by day. Now, during step 11, it’s time to move forward to improve your spiritual connections in life so that you are complete.<sup>1</sup> The other steps you’ve been taking up to this point have strengthened you and improved your relationship with yourself, with others, and it has strengthened you in a spiritual way, too.

As you might recall, in steps 2 and 3, the 12-step program addressed how participants are not to rely on themselves but on a ‘Higher Power.’<sup>2</sup> For many people, this means relying on God and the Bible. For others, it may mean simply letting go of their self-will.
<h2>11th Step Prayer &amp; Meditation</h2>
The main crux of this 11<sup>th</sup> step is prayer and meditation, so let’s talk about that for a moment. During step 11, you are encouraged to call out in prayer whenever you have a need, a temptation, or simply want additional inspiration.<sup>1 </sup>You might say, “I’m not a religious person.” That’s quite alright. Even people who are not religious can gain a lot from this step. For example, think about the last time you had an emergency. You probably instinctively (even quietly in your mind) called out for help. You didn’t consider yourself to be praying; you were just experiencing a problem, and inwardly, you called for help.<sup>1</sup> This may not even be considered a “prayer” by some definitions, but that is what step 11 is all about.<sup>1</sup> It simply means that when you need any type of assistance, don’t rely solely on your own strength or power, but rather reach outward for help.<sup>1</sup>

You must recognize that you are powerless and in need of help that comes from outside of yourself.<sup>1</sup> You don’t have to say a lot of words out loud or say any special kind of words to complete step 11. Calling out for help when in need is a universal action that we all understand.

Of course, many people do find comfort in actually praying out loud or saying God’s name when they pray. That’s perfectly fine too. There is no right or wrong way to do this step.

Remember that you don’t have to wait until you are having a problem or need to practice step 11. You can find solace and comfort in prayer and meditation when you are thankful and happy too. You might feel like expressing gratitude in your heart for accomplishing another day of being sober, or you might find thankfulness within you for nature, good health, and so on. These acts of gratitude also strengthen your spiritual connection.

Prayer and meditation enhance the quality of your recovery. However, it’s vital to continue attending AA meetings so you can receive the full benefits to heal.
<h2>Step 11 Questions to Ask Yourself</h2>
It’s always helpful to take time each day to assess how you are doing. It keeps you accountable and ensures that you stay on the road to recovery. To help you with this process, you can ask yourself a series of questions such as the following to stimulate your thinking:
<ul>
 	<li>Have I changed my understanding of a “higher power” since starting the 12-step program?</li>
 	<li>What does prayer mean to me? What does meditation mean to me?</li>
 	<li>Am I on a spiritual path right now? If so, what is it?</li>
 	<li>Do I see a difference between religion and spirituality? If so, what is the difference?</li>
 	<li>Am I exploring my own spirituality? If so, how am I accomplishing this?</li>
 	<li>Do I gain help from practicing this step of prayer and meditation? Does it help me put things in perspective?</li>
 	<li>What impact have prayer and meditation had on my life?</li>
 	<li>Have I noticed the presence of a higher power working in my life? What has that experience been like?</li>
 	<li>Am I taking steps to improve my spiritual connections?</li>
 	<li>Have I found what my purpose for life is? If so, what is it?</li>
 	<li>Am I aligning my will with God’s will for the future?</li>
 	<li>Am I committed to working on the 11<sup>th</sup> step in my recovery?</li>
 	<li>When was the last time I prayed or meditated?</li>
 	<li>Do I believe that I can accomplish whatever the purpose and will are for my life? Do I have the courage to move forward to accomplish it?</li>
</ul>
As you continue on the pathway of healing and sobriety, the 11<sup>th</sup> step will help you along the way.

You are now making your way to the end. It’s time to embark on the final AA step 12 discussion and talk about all that it entails for your life.

During this vital step, you will learn how to empower and help others as you continue your journey of sobriety. You will better understand how to embrace all 12 steps and live a life of acceptance and understanding.
<h2>What Is Step 12 of AA?</h2>
The 12<sup>th</sup> step is the last step of the program, and it discusses how you can be an example and testimony to others who are struggling with the same issues because of the dramatic, life-changing event that has occurred in your life. The exact quote for step 12 is as follows:<sup>1</sup>

<em>“Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.”</em>

There are two parts to this step. The first part deals with your spiritual awakening and the second part discusses carrying the message to others.<sup>1</sup> Working through the steps leads to your spiritual awakening;<sup>1</sup> AA also calls you to help others and be accountable to others. During your journey, you have accomplished goals and life changes that you never could achieve in your own strength and power.<sup>1</sup> The ability to quit drinking and live soberly is a powerful achievement and proves that you are a new person. You’ve experienced a spiritual awakening.

According to the 12 Steps of AA, you are now prepared and able to carry the message of hope to others.<sup>1</sup> Your new life is evident to others, and it is an inspiration to those around you.<sup>1</sup> As you put into practice the things you’ve learned, you will continue to inspire and help others—that is one way you are carrying the message forward.

Sharing your life-changing experience brings hope and inspiration to those who hear it. They will see the evidence of your new life and realize that there is hope for them, too. But it doesn’t stop there. When you share your story and message of hope, you will discover it gives you added strength as well. The more you share your message, the stronger you become in your stand—in your new life.

The spiritual awakening that you’ve experienced is a direct result of the previous step 11.<sup>2</sup> This step paved the way for the new life you’re experiencing. It also reinforces the spiritual principles of the 12 steps. However, this step is often difficult and challenging for many people because they must publicly acknowledge they are experiencing alcoholism.
<h2>Spiritual Awakening in AA Step 12</h2>
Now is a good time to review what you learned in the previous 11 steps. During these steps, you:<sup>1</sup>
<ul>
 	<li>Were helpless to get rid of alcoholism, yet this powerlessness was a key to move forward, as you admitted it.</li>
 	<li>Realized that your own strength would not suffice to help break the power of alcohol, but a higher power was necessary.</li>
 	<li>Put your alcoholism problems in the hands of that higher power, which is God for many.</li>
 	<li>Searched your inner self for moral failures and made an inventory of them.</li>
 	<li>Confessed these failings to God and another person.</li>
 	<li>Were willing and asked for a higher power to remove the defects that you confessed.</li>
 	<li>Took inventory of those you had harmed and made the wrongs rights as best you could.</li>
 	<li>Continued to assess your behavior and made corrections as needed.</li>
 	<li>Practiced prayer and meditation as you sought the purpose for your life.<sup>2</sup></li>

You are more prepared now to move forward with the 12<sup>th</sup> step of spiritual awakening and carrying the message to others. When a person undergoes a spiritual awakening, they are transformed by the psychic, life-changing occurrence.<sup>1</sup> Consequently, their obsession to drink alcohol is vastly reduced.<sup>1</sup> They have a new purpose and meaning in their life, which motivates them to abstain from alcohol.<sup>1</sup>

People experience their spiritual awakening in different ways.<sup>3</sup> For some people, the occurrence is sudden. It will be as if a lightbulb is switched on.<sup>3</sup> The awakening is so powerful and real that they are immediately aware that a change has occurred. However, for other people, it occurs differently. They gradually are awakened and discover that their life is different.<sup>3</sup> Sometimes, they may recognize the change because someone points it out to them.<sup>3</sup> Whether you are slowly awakening or suddenly transformed, stay on the path of sobriety and share the story of your change.
<h2>Ways of Carrying the AA Message</h2>
The other component of step 12 is to carry the message of alcohol recovery forward to other people.<sup>1</sup> You can do this in several ways. Different people have different methods for sharing the message with others. Both subtle and bold methods of delivery are acceptable. One way you can share the positivity of your new life is to help new attendees to the program feel at ease. You can do this by creating a welcoming and non-judgmental environment. As others feel relaxed, it can help them open up about their struggles with alcoholism; therefore, encouraging them on the road to recovery.

If a conversation opens for you to discuss your successes with the 12-step program, then do so with humility and courage. You want to keep in mind that the program is not one of promotion but one of attraction.<sup>1</sup> You want to live a life that attracts others to a sober life so they can find out for themselves what it is all about.<sup>1</sup> As they see how you are leading by example, it will motivate them to want to know more about the process.<sup>1</sup>

When you continue with the program by working with others, you benefit others and yourself. Your purpose for helping others in the program is not only for their good, but it keeps you on track as well.<sup>1</sup> In fact, any kind of outreach and help to others will be beneficial to you in your recovery.<sup>4</sup> Research shows that community service to others helps people recovering from alcoholism to stay on the right path.<sup>4</sup> In addition, as you share your story, you will see the good that you’re doing and make yourself accountable at the same time. The more you practice the steps, talk about it, and live it, the stronger you become as you continue on the pathway of recovery.<sup>1, 5</sup>
<h2>Alcohol Recovery After AA 12-Step Program</h2>
Many people think that after they have completed the 12-step AA program, they are completely recovered and finished with the process. However, this is not the case. Alcoholism involves a life-long walk of abstaining, accountability, and self-discipline.<sup>5</sup> When you continue to practice the 12 steps you learned, it will help you live a sober life away from alcohol. It is vital to stay connected to your recovery community through AA so you don’t lose track of your goals. Participants who are committed to attending the 12-step meetings regularly have success in staying abstinent from alcohol.<sup>5</sup> By attending regular AA meetings or group therapy with like-minded individuals, you will have added support on your journey. During AA meetings, you have ample opportunities to relearn the 12 steps. This helps keep you stay focused on sobriety. Also, you will have an opportunity to share the message as mentioned in the 12<sup>th</sup> step.
